01 / About 1877 Capital
Do you hold or move money?
No. 1877 Capital never holds client money. If a diaspora member and a business decide to go further, any transaction is handled by a licensed partner under its own terms.
What is the corporate structure?
1877 Capital Ltd is a UK founded technology company registered in England and Wales, company number 17338653. Our Jamaican operating company is undergoing incorporation.
Where does the name come from?
From Kingston's coordinates, roughly 18°N 77°W. It's where we started, not the limit of what we do.
How is the company funded?
1877 Capital is founder-funded. Information for eligible UK investors is available through our investors page.
02 / For the diaspora
What is an expression of interest?
It tells a business you would like to hear more. It is not an investment, a commitment to pay or advice. Every expression of interest has a 48-hour cooling-off period, set by us, during which you can withdraw it.
Why is there a 48-hour cooling-off period?
So nobody feels rushed. You can withdraw during that time with no obligation.
Can anyone register?
The waitlist is open to people in the UK, US and Canada first. Other countries will follow, subject to local rules.
Is backing a business risky?
Yes. Any small business can fail and you could lose everything you put in. Grades describe readiness from records; they are not a prediction or advice.
03 / For businesses
Is Operate really free?
Yes, for businesses. No subscription and no cut of your sales.
How do you make money if Operate is free?
We earn from our diaspora platform and from programmes that use our partner console and anonymised insight. We never charge businesses for Operate and never sell personal data.
Does Operate work without signal?
Yes. You can record sales and daily figures with no signal, and everything syncs when you reconnect.
Does Operate give tax, legal or accounting advice?
No. Operate helps you keep records and prepares figures for you to check, but it does not replace an accountant, attorney or tax adviser.
04 / Grades and data
Can I see my own readiness grade?
Yes, with the reasons, before anyone else.
Do you sell data?
No. We never sell personal data. We never share a business's records with anyone the business has not chosen, except in the cases set out in our privacy notice or where the law requires it. Anonymised statistics never identify a business and never use fewer than 10 businesses.
How are grades calculated?
From six weighted factors: Financial health 30, Founder quality 20, Market opportunity 15, Compliance and governance 15, Technology readiness 10, Collateral and assets 10. Every grade shows its reasons. How grades work.
Can a business challenge its grade?
Yes. A business can ask for a person to review its grade, give its view and challenge it. Grades also update as new records come in.
05 / Partners
What is the partner console?
A view for development agencies, chambers and programmes to track cohort progress, referrals and readiness.
What can partners see?
Anonymised cohort figures by default. A business's own records only when that business switches sharing on, and it can switch it off at any time.
How do we request a briefing?
