Who we are
1877 Capital Ltd, a UK founded technology company registered in England and Wales, company number 17338653, 66 Paul Street, London EC2A 4NA. We are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office, reference C2008200. Our Jamaican operating company is undergoing incorporation. Contact us about data protection at hello@1877capital.com.
Our roles
For our website, waitlists, investor enquiries and the diaspora platform, we decide how your data is used: we are the controller. When a business uses Operate to keep records about its own customers and staff, the business decides what goes in and we process it on the business's behalf, as its processor, under our terms with that business. Where we use Operate records in anonymised form to improve our readiness engine or produce insight, we are responsible for that use.
What we collect
- What you type into our forms: name, email, country, organisation, business details, WhatsApp number if you give it, and your message.
- Investor statements from people interested in investing in 1877 Capital itself: name, email, the statement type, your answers and the date and time. These are not diaspora platform users.
- Private preview access records: who used a code, when, and approximate location.
- Operate records a business chooses to keep.
- Basic technical logs our hosting provider keeps for security, such as IP address and the pages requested.
Our standard
We never sell personal data. We never share a business's records with anyone the business has not chosen, except in the cases below or where the law requires it.
When we share information
Businesses and diaspora members, at your request
When you register interest in a business, we share your name and message with that business. When a business lists on the platform, diaspora members see what the listing covers.
Partners you choose
When a business switches on sharing with a development agency, funding body or programme, we share only what that setting covers. The business can switch it off at any time and sharing stops from then on.
People you invite
Accountants, advisers or staff added to a workspace see what their role allows.
Anonymised insight
We may share aggregated statistics with partners and public bodies. These never identify a business or a person, and we never report a figure drawn from fewer than 10 businesses.
Service providers
Hosting, email, security and AI providers that process data for us under written contracts. Some are in the United States.
Professional advisers
Our lawyers, accountants, auditors and insurers, all under duties of confidentiality.
Legal requirements
A court order, or a lawful request from a regulator or law enforcement body in the UK or Jamaica.
Business transfers
If 1877 Capital is sold or merged, the buyer would be bound by this notice.
International transfers
Some of our providers store or process data outside the UK, including in the United States, and data also moves between the UK and Jamaica. Where data leaves the UK we use approved safeguards, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Where data leaves Jamaica we follow the transfer rules in Jamaica's Data Protection Act 2020.
Legal basis
- Consent: waitlists, emails about the platform, and sharing a business chooses to switch on.
- Contract: running Operate and the platform for you.
- Legitimate interests: security, keeping records of investor statements, answering your enquiries, and improving our services using anonymised data.
- Legal obligation: tax and company records.
Grades and automated decisions
Readiness grades are produced by software and reviewed by a person before anyone else sees them. You can ask for a person to review a grade, give your view and challenge it.
How long we keep it
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Waitlist and enquiries | Until you unsubscribe, or 24 months without contact |
| Investor statements | 6 years from the date of the statement |
| Business records in Operate | As long as the business uses Operate, then as set out in our terms. Jamaican tax records must be kept for at least 6 years; our policy is 7. |
| Security logs | 12 months |
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, restrict or object to how we use it, take it with you, withdraw consent, and use the rights about automated decisions above. Email hello@1877capital.com. Please complain to us first if you can. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113) or, in Jamaica, the Office of the Information Commissioner.
